# Suggested questions on your pages

> Where the suggested questions on each page come from, and how to change them.

When a shopper opens your Anagram chat, they see a few short questions they can tap instead of typing, like "Is this waterproof?" or "How does the sizing run?" These are **suggested questions**. Most shoppers won't write a question from scratch, but they'll tap one that's right there, so these questions matter.

You don't have to do anything to get them. By default, Anagram's AI writes them for every page of your site. This page is for when you want to choose them yourself.

**One term to know first:** a **placement** is one spot where the Anagram chat shows up on your site, like a search-style bar in the middle of the page or a chat button in the corner. Many stores have just one. You manage placements on the **Launch** page in Anagram. See [Placements](https://docs.anagram.ai/launch/placements.md).

## TL;DR

| I want to change questions for... | Setting | Where |
| - | - | - |
| [**One product**](#one-product) | Questions written just for that product | **Brain** → **Catalog** |
| [**A group of products**](#a-group-of-products) | A suggestion set for a collection, a tag, or products you pick | **Launch** → your placement |
| [**Everything on a placement**](#everything-on-a-placement) | Fixed questions | **Launch** → your placement |
| [**Nothing (the default)**](#the-default-ai-questions) | The AI writes questions for each page | Nothing to set |

* **The most specific setting wins.** One product beats a group, a group beats everything, and anything you set beats the AI.
* **Every setting is per placement.** If you have two placements, set your questions on each one.
* **Product questions show only on that product's own page**, the page a shopper lands on when they click the product. Pages that show many products at once, like your homepage or a collection page, get questions about the page instead.
* **If each color is a separate product in Shopify instead of a variant, set questions on each color.** See [When each color is a separate product](#when-each-color-is-a-separate-product).
* **Changes take up to 5 minutes** to show on your live site.

## One product

**Use this when** one product needs its own questions, or the same product shows different questions on different pages and you want them to match.

**Where:** **Brain** → **Catalog**. The Catalog is the list of products Anagram has copied from your Shopify store.

**1. Find the product**

In Anagram, open **Brain** in the menu, open the **Catalog**, and use **Search products** to find it. Click the product to open its details.

**2. Find the placement**

Scroll to **Suggested questions**. If you have more than one placement, there's a box for each one, with the placement's name at the top.

**3. Write your questions**

Click **Write your own** (or **Write questions for this product**). Type up to four questions and click **Save questions**.

To change them later, click **Edit questions**. To undo, click **Remove**, and that placement goes back to whatever it showed before: a group's questions, fixed questions, or AI questions.

**This changes** every version of the product's own page:

* its main product page
* the product opened from inside a collection
* links to a specific color or size
* versions of the page in other languages

**This doesn't change:**

* **Other placements.** Each placement has its own box, so repeat the steps for each one.
* **Other colors, if each color is a separate product in Shopify.** See [When each color is a separate product](#when-each-color-is-a-separate-product).
* **Pages that show many products at once**, like your homepage, a collection page that lists it, a landing page, or a blog post. Those pages show questions about the page as a whole.

> [!NOTE]
>
> You'll also see these questions on the **Launch** page, listed as a suggestion set for this one product. That's expected: it's the same thing, and you can edit it from either place.

## A group of products

**Use this when** many products should share the same questions: everything in a collection, everything with a tag, or a handful of products you pick. A group like this is called a **suggestion set**.

**Where:** **Launch** → open your placement → **Suggestion sets**. (Collections and tags are the ones you've set up in Shopify.)

**1. Add a set**

Click **Add suggestion set** and choose what it targets:

* **Collection.** Every product in a Shopify collection, like "Whiteboards".
* **Tag.** Every product with a Shopify tag, like `magnetic`.
* **Specific products.** Only the products you search for and pick. For a single product, [the Catalog](#one-product) is the easier way to do the same thing.

**2. Add the questions**

Type the questions for the set, like "What sizes are available?"

**3. Save**

Click **Save changes**.

**This changes** the product pages of every product in the group. Products you add to the collection or tag in Shopify later pick up the questions automatically, once Anagram next copies your products from Shopify (it does this daily).

**This doesn't change:**

* **Products outside the group.**
* **Other placements.** Add the set to each placement that needs it.
* **Pages that show many products at once**, like your homepage or a collection page.

If a product belongs to two sets, the one higher in the list wins. New sets are added to the bottom of the list. More detail is on the [Suggestion sets](https://docs.anagram.ai/launch/suggestion-sets.md) page.

## When each color is a separate product

In Shopify, colors and sizes are usually set up as **variants**: options inside one product, like the 3x4 and 4x6 sizes of a whiteboard. But some stores set up each color as a **separate product** instead of a variant. On your store it can look the same, with color swatches on one page, but in Shopify each color is its own product, with its own page.

For example, say your Classic whiteboard comes with a silver frame or a black frame, and the product page shows a swatch for each. In Shopify, though, the two frames aren't variants of one product. They're two separate products: **Classic Whiteboard - Silver** and **Classic Whiteboard - Black**. Clicking a swatch takes the shopper to the other product's page.

Anagram follows how your products are set up in Shopify, so it treats each color as a different product:

* Each color gets its own AI questions.
* Questions you write for one color don't show on the other colors' pages.

**How to tell:** go to **Brain** → **Catalog** and search for the product. If each color has its own name, like **Classic Whiteboard - Silver** and **Classic Whiteboard - Black**, each color is a separate product. Variants don't have this problem: questions you write for a product cover all of its variants, like its sizes.

**What to do:**

* **For a few colors:** [add a suggestion set](#a-group-of-products) on **Launch** that targets **Specific products**, and pick every color. One set covers them all. Or, in the Catalog, click **Write your own** on each color and use the same questions.
* **For many products, or if you add colors often:** give all the colors a shared tag in Shopify, like `classic-whiteboard`. Then [add a suggestion set](#a-group-of-products) for that tag. Every color with the tag shows the same questions, including colors you add later. After tagging in Shopify, click **Sync now** in the Catalog, or wait for the daily sync.

If all the colors already sit in their own Shopify collection, you can use a collection set instead of a tag.

## Everything on a placement

**Use this when** a placement has one job and you want the same questions on every page, like a landing page with "Find my shade" and "Take the quiz".

**Where:** **Launch** → open your placement → **Suggestions**

**1. Switch to fixed**

Under **Suggestions**, choose **Fixed suggestions**.

**2. Add the questions**

Type each question into the **Add a suggestion** field and click **Add**. Remove one by clicking the x on it.

**3. Save**

Click **Save changes**.

**This changes** every page the placement appears on, and turns off AI questions for that placement.

**This doesn't change:**

* **Products covered by a suggestion set** (one product or a group). Those still show their own questions.
* **Other placements.**

***

## The default: AI questions

If you haven't set any questions yourself, the AI writes them. This happens when a placement's **Suggestions** setting is on **Auto**, which is where every placement starts.

**How it works:**

* **On a product page**, the AI reads the product's name, description, and price, and writes a few questions about it, like "Is this waterproof?"
* **On any other page**, like your homepage, a collection page, or a blog post, the AI reads the page and writes questions about it.
* **The first time a shopper visits a page**, Anagram writes its questions and saves them. Every shopper after that sees the same questions on that page.

### Why the same product can show different questions

The AI writes questions **one page at a time, not one product at a time.** Your store often has several links for the same product: its main page, the product opened from inside a collection, a link to a specific color or size, or another language. Each link gets its own questions, written separately, so the wording can differ even though the product is the same.

To make them match, [write questions for the product](#one-product) or [add it to a group](#a-group-of-products).

> [!NOTE]
>
> If the pages are for different colors, check whether each color is a separate product in Shopify. If it is, see [When each color is a separate product](#when-each-color-is-a-separate-product).

### Getting fresh AI questions

AI questions don't update on their own when you edit a product in Shopify. To get new ones, go to **Brain** → **Catalog**, open the product, and under **Suggested questions** click **Regenerate suggestions**. It usually takes under a minute.

Regenerating rewrites the AI questions on every version of that product's page, for every placement on **Auto**. To see them all, click **Also saved for *N* other pages of this product** under the questions.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Regenerating gives you fresh questions, not matching ones. Each page is still written separately. If you need the same questions on every page of a product, [write your own](#one-product).

## Check what a product is showing

Open the product in **Brain** → **Catalog**. Under **Suggested questions**, each placement's box has a label that tells you which setting is in charge, and a button that takes you to the right place to change it:

| Label | Comes from | Button |
| - | - | - |
| **Written for this product** | [One product](#one-product) | **Edit questions** |
| **Suggestion set** | [A group of products](#a-group-of-products) | **Edit set** |
| **Fixed questions** | [Everything on a placement](#everything-on-a-placement) | **Edit placement** |
| **AI-generated** | [The AI](#the-default-ai-questions) | **Regenerate suggestions** or **Write your own** |
| **Store finder** | The placement opens your store locator instead of showing questions | **Edit placement** |

***

## Example: two whiteboard pages with different questions

Your team notices two pages showing the same whiteboard with different suggested questions.

1. Go to **Brain** → **Catalog**, search for the whiteboard, and open it.
2. Under **Suggested questions**, the label says **AI-generated**. That's why they differ: the two pages are different versions of the whiteboard's page (say, one opened from your "Office" collection), and the AI wrote questions for each one separately.
3. Click **Write your own**, write the questions you want, and click **Save questions**.

Within 5 minutes, every page for that whiteboard shows the same questions on that placement. If you have more than one placement, repeat step 3 in each box.

If you want *all* your whiteboards to match, add a suggestion set for your whiteboards collection on **Launch** instead.
